Biography

Jossie Pérez, Mezzo-Soprano

Already championed by leaders in her field including Placido Domingo and James Levine, Jossie Pérez has been making waves since she first stepped on the stage of the Metropolitan to win the National auditions in 1999. Recently her talent prompted the Boston Globe to write "The mezzo's got looks, charisma, confidence, humour and a voice to die for - resinously sexy at the bottom and blooming into a full soprano at the top. She sang with subtlety, craftsmanship, and fire…Jossie Pérez is Carmen."
Born in Puerto Rico, Jossie Pérez recently completed the Metropolitan Opera's Young Artist Program. During the 2003-4 season she sang Flora in La Traviata and Cherubino in Le Nozze Di Figaro. She then appeared as Rosina in Il Barbiere Di Siviglia and Dorabella in Cosi Fan Tutte. This summer, she performs Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni with the Bellingham Festival of Music. Highlights of next season include Maffio Orsini in Lucrezia Borgia with the Fundación Festival de Opera de Oviedo and Siébel in Faust with the Metropolitan. In 2003, Ms. Pérez performed for the first time the role of Carmen with the Boston Lyric Opera. The season also included Idamante in Idomeneo with Placido Domingo, Ascanio in Les Troyens and Dryade in Ariadne Auf Naxos, all with the Metropolitan. In 2002, Ms. Perez appeared at the Salzburg Festival in Parsifal. She also performed a soloist in Handel's Messiah and in Mozart's Requiem.
Ms. Pérez received her degree in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory in 1998. She is a winner of the 2001 Operalia competition and a Sara Tucker Study Grant.
This is Jossie Pérez' second participation to Lyrique en Mer; she will sing the title role in Carmen.
