American soprano Tamara Matthews performs a remarkably varied body of repertoire on opera and concert stages around the world. Possessing "a glorious instrument, velvety and warm, glistening with light and dramatically forceful", Ms. Matthews' singing resulted in her acclaimed Carnegie Hall debut in 1994 as first prize winner of the Musica Sacra Bach Vocal Competition.
Ms. Matthews recent American concert performances include appearances in Carnegie Hall (St. Matthew Passion); Kennedy Center (Mass in B Minor, Messiah); with the Cleveland Orchestra (Beethoven Mass in C); Philadelphia Orchestra (Poulenc Gloria), with an esteemed list of conductors. Upcoming engagements include performances with the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonika (Beethoven 9ths), a recording of Bach Magnificat and Vivaldi Gloria, and recitals around the world.
With some fifteen recordings to her credit, Ms. Matthews discography continues to grow in size and diversity. An impressive Bach collection includes recordings as soprano soloist in the Mass in B Minor, the Christmas Oratorio, St. Matthew and St. John Passions.
In addition to a busy performing career, Ms. Matthews teaches and conducts master classes at festivals and seminars. In 2003, she accepted a position at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina.
This is Tamara Matthews' third year with Lyrique en Mer. She will sing the soprano solo in Messiah and the First Lady in The Magic Flute.
